My 50 Favorite Albums of 2008: #41

Number 41

Listening to Jason Collett’s latest, I knew that it didn’t match the front-to-back, impressive set that was his Motor Motel Love Songs, but there are plenty of individual tracks on Here’s To Being Here that make it a worthwhile entry on this list. I’ll never forget the initial impact that “Sorry Lori”, track number two on the record, had on me; because I still tap my toes to it with the same enthusiasm (if not more) when I pop it in to this day, roughly a hundred listens later. There is a healthy mixture of both upbeat and mellow numbers throughout this album, which continues a stapled trend that’s been set in place over the course of his four solo outings. Besides the undeniably charming high-point that is “Sorry Lori”, the album’s other gems are “Somehow” and “Through the Night These Days”, among a couple others. Collett has definitely established himself as a consistently good singer/songwriter, even apart from his friends in Broken Social Scene, and it’s probably only a matter of time before he unveils a career-crowning masterwork.
