NO DEACHUNTER: new Neckbrace music video

August 10, 2009

Three very loud and very different artists took the stage at Rhino’s in Bloomington this past Wednesday for a round-robin monster set, and it was a glorious experience. No Age provided the rough energy….Deerhunter gave us their trademark rocking weirdness….and Dan Deacon – well – the Baltimore-based electronic artist is every bit the maniacal genius that his albums suggest.

Here is the music video I edited last night.

My 50 Favorite Albums of 2008: #27

December 16, 2008

Number 27

When listening to anything No Age has created to this point, it’s hard to believe that this experimental group consists of only two members; Los Angeles-natives Randy Randall and Dean Allen Spunt. Over the last two years, through extensive touring and hard work, they have developed a following for being strong supporters of all-ages venues, insisting on playing everywhere anyone is allowed. They’ve also quickly became favorites among their peers, already playing with the likes of Liars, and getting much respect from popular artists like Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, among others. When listening to their second full-length – and debut for Sub Pop Records – Nouns, it’s easy to understand why they have been rising to acclaim since its emergence and added to best newcomers lists all over the place alongside frequents, Bon Iver, and Fleet Foxes. In a way this album could be called their official debut, since 2007’s Weirdo Rippers was essentially a full-length compilation of EP’s released in the past. The strength of No Age is their unpredictability, which twists and turns many times within each song on Nouns. In a few years, when we’re looking back on what catapulted them to a long and successful career in music, all fingers will point to the odd, energetic “Eraser”, which is definitely one of the top singles of 2008. Nouns comes and goes in a very quick breeze of time, but luckily we have the repeat button available to us at any given time of our liking.
